Sylvia to Fight Fedor in Dallas?

Posted On: April 8, 2008 at 2:38pm

Sherdog is reporting the Fighters.com’s third and fifth ranked heavyweights, “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (24-4) and “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) respectively, will headline a 19 July Affliction-promoted card in Dallas.

Sherdog reports confirmation of the fight from Emelianenko.

However, a reliable source informs Fighters.com that, though negotiations are close to concluding with a deal, there is no signed contract for the fight.

Sylvia lost to interim UFC Heavyweight Champion “Minotauro” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-4-1), Fighters.com’s first-ranked heavy, in February.

Emelianenko would end a two-and-a-half year draught of quality competition versus Sylvia.

Fighters.com was first to report the negotiations between the two fighters’ camps had begun.  More details to come as the story unfolds.

Wow. Sylvia doesn’t finish anyone in about 3 years and he gets to fight Fedor. Good for him, I guess. I still don’t know why the UFC can’t put out the $$$ to sign Fedor. They would more than make it back in PPV and gate.

I am sure Tim is already lining up his excuses for losing now: pulled muscle; PMS; ate some bad lobster the night before; still emotional over the fact that Matt Hughes hates him, etc.

Pride didn’t pull much at all with Fedor on the card in Vegas and he had guys like Barrnet, Hendo, Vitor, Coleman, and Shogun on the card to help out. I think Fedor’s asking price is just too much for a fight in the USA.

I agree, Fedor is probably asking to much, inactivity and not fighting top contenders are affecting already, he should be back on track to negotiate a better deal if he destroys Silvia though. I am sure that is a big reason to take the fight.

Really bud09? I was thinking Emelianenko hasn’t fought anyone worth mentioning for two-and-a-half years and he gets to fight Sylvia?

If these rumors are true. Fedor is going to destroy Tim Silvia. Fedor is a tough fighter to beat.

    Chad,

I see your point in a way, but—’getting to fight’ Sylvia—is this some sort of privilege?
Both of these guys are at a crossroads in their respective careers, no?
Upon further review, though, perhaps Fedor has more to lose in fighting Tim. If Tim beats him, it partially validates Dana White’s propaganda about Fedor, but if Fedor wins, Tim is still a top ten heavyweight. Great, now I don’t know WHAT I think . . .

“Getting to fight” Fedor is only significant because we’ve made it so. His managers have done a good job of reaching a point where he can demand $2 million per fight because there’s so much anticipation built up for Fedor to fight a real fight. In the meantime, Tim has had fight after fight with world-class fighters. His record isn’t as clean as Fedor’s, but, even with the losses, it’s more impressive.

That’s not to say one is more talented than the other, nor to predict who’ll win. That’s just an assessment of the chimera that is “getting to fight Fedor”. Fedor should’ve been fighting top-ranked guys like Tim all along, which is why Tim outranks him in Fighters.com’s heavyweight rankings.
