Chael Sonnen might be the man facing UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones at UFC 159 but he’s definitely not the division’s top contender. Rather, Sonnen earned his spot by baiting Jones with a constant stream of smack-talk while also drawing fans’ interest in the process.
However, giving Sonnen a title-shot rubbed a number of people the wrong way including Jones, and he plans to make it clear he is a class above the silver-tongued scrapper when the two lock horns later this month.
Jones recently told the UFC:
“The beautiful thing about Chael is that he uses his words (and) that’s about all he has. He’s just a gang of quotes that nobody’s going to remember.”
“He’s weak in every way, shape, or form. He taps before submissions are even sunk in. If I put one hand around his throat he’s probably going to tap.”
“No matter how much he tries to convince himself that he’s gonna win this fight or that he’s the champion without the belt, he doesn’t believe. And that’s why he comes up short in every opportunity he gets to be a champion. He doesn’t have a champion’s soul, heart, work ethic…nothing.”
“If Chael thinks he’s going to go out there and just repeatedly take me down like he did with Anderson Silva, he’s got another thing coming (and) he’s gonna know that right away. I will defeat Chael Sonnen in extremely devastating fashion.”
