Frankie Edgar Never Wants A Ref To Step In Early

Former UFC champion Frankie Edgar has been given the benefit of the doubt on a number of occasions when it comes to not having fights stopped early.

Edgar, who will return to action later this year against BJ Penn following a coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter, recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio about his feelings on early stoppages.

“I just want the chance to come back,” he said. “I’m sure it would never be like that where I’m getting my head beat in and the ref wouldn’t stop it, but I just want a chance to come back.”

Edgar (16-4-1) has won 10 fights inside the Octagon, including two over Penn (16-9-2). Some of his more memorable wins were against the former champion, along with his title defenses vs. Gray Maynard. The two will meet in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter Finale in July.

“I’m a fighter,” he said. “I can’t help it. I’m a competitor. I want to win and if I feel a ref stopped it too early, I would be upset.”
