Count Alexander Gustafsson among those in the corner of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones next month at UFC 172.
That doesn’t mean “The Mauler” is now a rooting fan of Jones, it just means he wants to be the one to take the belt off him.
Jones will defend his title against Glover Teixeira on April 26 from Baltimore. The winner is scheduled to face Gustafsson after that.
“I want him to beat Glover Teixeira,” said Gustafsson, during a recent interview on Beyond the Octagon, “because I want to take the belt from Jon Jones.”
Gustafsson (16-2) secured his championship rematch by finishing Jimi Manuwa earlier this month. He lost via decision to Jones last September.
When asked about a potential match with Daniel Cormier should something happen in the Jones-Teixeira bout, Gustafsson said “I think he has to have another fight or two before he will fight for the title.
“I think ‘DC’ is a great fighter. I respect him and think he’s a top contender,” he added.
