As usual, the UFC will be putting on a strong card to close out the calendar year, as officials confirmed UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez for the final event of the year.
While in Puerto Rico recently, UFC president Dana White made the announcement. Pettis and his brother, Sergio, were in attendance at the event.
Pettis (17-2) and Melendez (22-3) are set to coach on The Ultimate Fighter 20 later this year. The season will feature an all-female cast in the strawweight division, with a champion being crowned at the end.
No date or location has been announced for the year-end card, but December 27 is the likely date, as it is the final Saturday in the month.
Pettis has been on the mend since winning the title over Benson Henderson last August, as he suffered a knee injury. He earned a first round submission victory over Henderson, improving to 4-1 with the UFC.
Melendez has split his two Octagon bouts, falling to Henderson and defeating Diego Sanchez. He appeared on his way to Bellator MMA before the UFC matched the contract offered to him and presented him with both a title shot and spot on TUF.
