Now that former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida defeated Dan Henderson he is all set for a title shot. However, his manager Ed Soares has recently said that one of his main goals is to stay busy in the octagon. That means if the winner between Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen were to be injured in the bout, that Machida might be up for another fight before his title fight. Soares said that they might be up for it, but all the other light heavyweights are booked fighting each other.
He told InsideMMA:
“We’ve spoken with the UFC. Lyoto doesn’t want to spend too much time outside of the octagon. He wants to get in there and stay busy. He doesn’t want to wait too long. Chael vs. Jon Jones is the next fight. We have to first of all see how that fight turns out. Then we have to see if the winner comes out of there healthy.”
“We can’t really make any decisions until after Jones vs. Sonnen happens because when you look at the rankings, and you look at the top-10 fighters, all of the guys that make sense for Lyoto fight have fights already.”
