Shark Fights 14 Results: Shark Fight's HDNet Debut Sees Several Sloppy But Fun Fights

It’s been quite an interesting journey for upstart Texan promotion Shark Fights. Shark Fights 13 marked the promotion’s first foray onto Pay-Per-View, with names like Keith Jardine and Houston Alexander filling the card. Yesterday’s Shark Fight 14 event marked the promotion’s debut on HDNet, with some pretty interesting and drastic changes to the promotion’s visual aesthetic. And while it may not have had a whole lot of finesse, Shark Fights 14 was a fun little event. Here are the full results as well as some commentary on Shark Fights 14.
Danillo Villefort defeats Matt Horwich via Unanimous Decision. Tara LaRosa defeats Carina Damm via Inverted Heal Hook at :28 of Round 2. Mike Bronzoulis defeats Lucas Lopez via Unanimous Decision. Eric Davila defeats Alex Cisne via TKO at 1:03 Rd. 3. Gabe Vasquez defeats Layne Hernandez via Front Guillotine Choke at 1:29 of Round 3. Joseph Sandoval defeats Sean Shakour via Unanimous Decision. Quaint Kempf defeats Donnie Frye via Rear Naked Choke at 2:48 of Round 1. Derek Cansino defeats Larry Garcia via Unanimous Decision. Ryan Benoit defeats Matt Espinoza via TKO at 1:14 of Round 2. Matt Dodgen defeats Gino Davila via Unanimous Decision. Mark Martinez defeats Jonathan Valencia via Front Naked Choke at :23 of Round 1. Cesar Rodriguez Jr. defeats Tommy Gomez via Arm Bar at :34 of Round 1. Matt Hobar defeats Jeremy Gauna via Rear Naked Choke at 2:16 of Round 1.
If I could describe Shark Fights 14 in only a couple of words, those two words would be “sloppy fun”. A whole lot of the fights on HDNet weren’t technical marvels, in fact, many of the fighters gassed themselves out and resorted to brawling with large, looping punches that people even in the back of the crowd could see coming a mile away. That doesn’t mean that the fights were boring, although some were just a bit boring at times given how tired some of the fighters got. It was sloppy, of that there can be no doubt, but it usually wasn’t boring.
I also noticed a drastic improvement in production compared to Shark Fights 13. It appears that the HDNet crew really knows how to make a promotion look good, since the entire event benefited from great lighting and very tight, concise camera work. At one point I seriously expected a camera man to fall into the ring, given the angle of the shot and how close it was. I definitely appreciate HDNet’s ability to make even the smallest regional promotion look great on camera.
Although I will say that I weep for the loss of the greatest commentary team known to man, Bas Rutten and Don Frye. I really enjoy Michael “The Voice” Schiavello, but Frye and Rutten easily gave us some of the funniest commentary lines of all time when they teamed up for Shark Fights 13.
Overall, I enjoyed this event for the most part. Most of the time I had to shut off my brain to appreciate the fights, but the main event and co-main event were pretty engaging. I look forward to seeing where Shark Fights goes from here.
And what about you, fans and friends? Any thoughts on Shark Fights 14?
