This past Saturday night former 185-pound champion Ronaldo Souza exited his bout against Bristol Marunde with a victory in tow after combining his world-class BJJ ability with improved striking. Unfortunately he also came away with a broken hand that could keep him out for an extended period of time depending on a pending prognosis from a medical professional.
Souza revealed he’d injured mitt shortly after making his way backstage, later confirming the damage on Twitter where he also posted a picture of an X-Ray. In addition to having broken his left hand he also apparently fractured his thumb.
According to an interview with MMAFighting, “Jacare” hurt it in the first frame meaning he fought throughout the bulk of his bout while suffering from the affliction. Ultimately Souza picked up a submission win in the third round with an Arm-Triangle Choke, his twelfth career triumph by way of tap-out in fifteen total victories.
The 32-year old Brazilian had lobbied for a rematch with current middleweight title-holder Luke Rockhold based on their previous five-round affair though it seems likely he will now be forced to wait on the sidelines while Tim Kennedy gets a crack at the champ.
No timetable has been mentioned regarding Souza’s return to the ring or recovery time.
