Last night Thiago Alves ran a proverbial marathon against Martin Kampmann in the main event at UFC on FX 2, going back and forth for the bulk of the bout but maintaining a lead throughout. However, with the finish line in sight Alves stumbled only to watch Kampmann come away with the victory due to a very timely Guillotine Choke.
A visibly disappointed Alves addressed the outcome after having a few minutes to reflect on the loss, adhering to the old adage that hindsight is 20/20.
“I was happy that I was able to pick him apart. That was the plan, but unfortunately in the last 48 seconds, I got caught,” said Alves to Fuel TV. “It’s devastating. I just made a mistake and paid for it.”
“I know I’m better than this, but unfortunately I got caught. That’s life,” he concluded.
Alves has now lost four of his last six scraps with his only wins coming against mid-tier talent John Howard and Papy Abedi. The submission loss was the fourth in his nine total defeats.
