UFC welterweight “Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis (16-6) hasn’t made a lot of headlines lately, losing two consecutive fights versus 170-pound contenders. But, Monday his Twitter post about his opponent in one of those two loses, fifth-ranked “Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-6), reverberated through the MMA press. Davis Tweeted, “I hope Dan Hardy dies of AIDS.”
Davis lost a split decision to Hardy at UFC 99 in Cologne in June 2009 and lobbied after the fight for a rematch that never came. Instead, Hardy went on to earn a title shot versus Fighters.com and UFC Welterweight Champion “Rush” Georges St. Pierre (19-2) after a unanimous decision over ninth-ranked “Quick” Mike Swick (14-4). And, Davis went on to another knockout loss to tenth-ranked “Killa B” Ben Saunders (8-1-2).
Davis’s Tweet comes on the heels of Fighters.com’s third-ranked heavyweight and former UFC champion Frank Mir (13-4) telling WXDX radio in Pittsburgh, “[I want Brock Lesnar to be] the first person that dies due to Octagon-related injuries.” Mir subsequently issued an apology.
Davis hasn’t apologized, but did admit the Tweest was in “bad taste” but “fitting [after] he did the gay photos towards me which is worse. This was words; those are up for life.”
Before the Hardy-Davis matchup, Hardy PhotoShopped photos of Davis with homosexual references.
