Though the rematch between UFC middleweights Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva has yet to be booked, Sonnen certainly isn’t backing down from trying to paint the 185-pound champion in a less-than flattering way. This time around Sonnen has taken aim at Silva’s record and overall approach to MMA, accusing him of being more interested in making money through sponsorships than facing the sport’s best to cement his status as an all-time great.
“Anderson Silva’s not even a fighter,” said Sonnen in an interview with Stephan Bonnar for the TUF veteran’s Trash Talkin’ Kids brand. “Anderson Silva’s a part of the sport that makes his money and his fame off of endorsements that are ill-gotten and tainted.”
“Anderson Silva’s a fake and a phony and he’ll be remembered the same way Mike Tyson is: as a guy with a padded record who didn’t fight anybody,” the outspoken grappler concluded.
Silva holds an overall record of 31-4 with past wins over Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Demian Maia, Yushin Okami, Vitor Belfort, Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, and Forrest Griffin. Ironically, Sonnen himself has actually lost to a handful of the names in Silva’s win column including Maia and Griffin.
The two rivals are expected to face off in June with a possible venue in Brazil though nothing official has been confirmed.
