Josh Thomson Speaks Out: Not Happy About Gilbert Melendez News

The news of Gilbert Melendez returning to the UFC on a new deal wasn’t taken by all fighters to be a good thing.

Melendez agreed to terms with the promotion late Sunday night, scoring both a future shot at UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and spot on the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter as a coach.

Josh Thomson, who had a few run-ins with Melendez inside the Strikeforce cage, was one of those disappointed in the news.

“Saw this last night (a picture of Pettis and Melendez) and couldn’t sleep,” he posted on Instagram, “makes me sick to my stomach. Back at it, 5 a.m. cardio workout, Radio interview and a meeting with my managers later this afternoon about our next step in kicking these guys asses.

“‘Don’t throw dirt on my grave just yet.’”

Thomson, who lost his title shot after a decision loss to Benson Henderson, briefly flirted with retirement. He now appears dead-set on making a return, and eventually working his way back into a championship match.

Fellow former Strikeforce fighter and current UFC welterweight Tyron Woodley agreed with Thomson, replying to his post with “U and Pettis would have been much more interesting (in my opinion). Threat 2 go back 2 Strikeforce and they will likely give u a title shot lol.”

Melendez had reached an agreement with Bellator MMA, but the UFC held matching rights to the deal.
