One of the most deserving and yet easily underappreciated professional wrestlers in history will finally get his due this year after WWE announced Ron Simmons would join a 2012 Hall of Fame class already including The Four Horsemen, Mike Tyson, and Edge.
News of Simmons’ addition was revealed on last night’s Monday Night RAW episode.
Simmons, known to many for his work in WCW/WWE as a member of Doom, as well as the Nation of Domination and A.P.A., where he competed under his real name and Faarooq Asaad. One of his crowning moments came under WCW’s banner in 1992 where he won the world championship, becoming the first African-American to hold a major organization’s primary belt.
More recently Simmons has become known for his trademark style of delivering the word “damn”.
Simmons was also a highly successful collegiate athlete, starring at Florida State as a defensive lineman under the tutelage of Bobby Bowden and even getting drafted to the NFL before fizzling out.
