UFC Fight Night 36: Mousasi vs. Machida Recap

lyoto machida

Tonight’s UFC Fight Night 36 FS1 main event saw UFC middleweights Gegard Mousasi and Lyoto Machida square off in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. The Brazilan fans in attendance went home happy tonight after Machida was able to dictate the majority of the fight

Machida Bests Mousasi

Lyoto Machida faced a stern test tonight against Gegard Mousasi and he passed with flying colors. Machida showed that he is still learning new tricks even as his career progresses by mixing in a variety of new striking and grappling techniques. While Mousasi seemed to be finding his rhythm in the second, Machida continued to adapt and prevented the Iranian from ever getting comfortable in the Octagon. Machida is now a perfect 2-0 in the UFC’s middleweight division.

The fight was over when:

The biggest factor in this fight was Mousasi being unable to pin down Machida and effectively cut off the cage with his jab and footwork over the majority of the fight. While Mousasi seemed to be picking up on Machida’s tendencies early on, Machida did not get complacent and changed his own approach as the fight wore on and put the fight on the canvas a few times. Machida’s guerrilla style of fighting may not be most popular, but it is a very difficult riddle to solve and that is especially true at middleweight.

What’s Next?

While I love a good chess match of a fight, it is not always the best way to lead into a title fight. While Machida could get the nod and face the winner of Belfort/Weidman, I think “Jacaré” has done a bit more to earn that shot. If Belfort/Weidman is delayed at all, I think Machida vs. Jacaré makes a lot of sense.

For Mousasi, I think middleweight is his best division and despite the loss, he can still be a major factor in the division. It will be interesting to see what his decision is when he is faced with bouts at either 205 or 185.
