Gegard Mousasi’s Coach Not Excited By Bout With Lyoto Machida

Edmond Tarverdyan works closely with the likes of UFC female bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Gegard Mousasi, both of whom have bouts coming up over the next two weeks.

Mousasi takes on Lyoto Machida this Saturday night from Brazil in the main event of UFC Fight Night – and Tarverdyan is none too happy about it.

While some might thing he doesn’t want his fighter competing in Machida’s backyard, that has nothing to do with it.

“Gegard had knee surgery,” said Tarverdyan, during a recent media scrum (thanks to MMAFighting.com for the video). “Ten months off, I hate that fight; I’m gonna be honest.

“I would like to see how Gegard performed if his knee was good and he just had a fight. As a trainer’s point of view…..Gegard is always dangerous and he’s my boy, so I’m rooting for him.”

While the actual fight is not to Tarverdyan’s liking, the decision to compete at middleweight instead of light heavyweight is. Mousasi debuted in the UFC with a win at 205 pounds last year.

“Gegard trains hard and keeps disciplined and is strong at 185,” he said. “He can do it.”
