In a bout likely to determine the man who will challenge the winner of the summer title-fight between Junior dos Santos-Alistair Overeem, it appears the UFC is aiming to put together a fight featuring former champions Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez colliding inside the cage. Though the bout is far from official, the source behind the organization’s interest is as reliable as they come – CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.
Fertitta relayed the UFC’s intention via Twitter.
Mir has won a trio of consecutive tilts since last falling in early 2010 including finishes of Mirko Filipovic and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as well as a lopsided outpointing of Roy Nelson. He also holds a previous victory over Nogueira, as well as notched instances of success against the likes of Cheick Kongo and Brock Lesnar.
The heavyweight champion as recently as this past November, the 9-1 Velasquez tasted defeat for the first time when he faced Dos Santos and will be looking to get back to the same form seeing him pick up wins against Nogueira, Kongo, Lesnar, and Ben Rothwell.
No date or specific event were mentioned for the match-up though it would likely take place at some point soon as both fighters have been resting/training since late 2011.
