Ricardo Lamas: “If guys are dropping weight classes, they should earn their spot.”

UFC featherweight Ricardo Lamas has done everything in his power to establish himself as a clear cut #1 contender in the division. The 13-2 Lamas is on a four-fight winning streak including success against three other potential challengers to champion Jose Aldo in the form of Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki, and Erik Koch.

However, the UFC opted to go with Anthony Pettis instead of Lamas for the honor of challenging for Aldo’s title, selecting a competitor who will be fighting at 145 pounds for the first time in his career rather than the most deserving man performance-wise.

Lamas spoke to UFC Tonight about the situation where his anger was both evident and understandable.

“I’m pretty upset about it. I’m busting my ass, I put in all this work and I’m not being rewarded. I’m just a little dumbfounded by the whole situation.”

“I thought I already established I was the #1 contender.”
