Two intriguing bouts have been added to the April UFC 172 card, as Anthony Johnson returns to the Octagon.
Johnson will face top contender Phil Davis at light heavyweight, while middleweights Luke Rockhold and Tim Boetsch were also confirmed.
The event takes place April 26 from Baltimore and the Baltimore Arena. In the headline fight, Jon Jones defends his UFC light heavyweight title against Glover Teixeira.
Johnson (16-4) has won six straight fights since being released by the UFC following a loss to Vitor Belfort. He dealt with weight-cutting issues while with the promotion, but has seemed to find a home at 205 pounds.
“As most of you know I’m back in the UFC and will be fighting Phil Davis,” Johnson posted on his official Facebook page. “I’m blessed for the opportunity I have received. Thank you to all my supporters and doubters.
“It was much needed and thank you to the UFC, Phil Davis, the Blackzilians, Glenn Robinson and ASM. Also would like to thank WSOF for being a awesome organization and helping me improve my career and my life. Much respect to everybody.”
Davis (12-1) has won three straight since a no-contest with Wagner Prado, which he avenged. That includes a decision victory over Lyoto Machida in Brazil.
“I will be there fighting,” Davis wrote. “I can’t wait! Welcome back dude.”
Rockhold (11-2) was the final Strikeforce middleweight champion, and earned his first UFC victory by topping Costa Philippou last month. He also lost to Belfort last year.
Boetsch (17-6) is coming off a victory over C.B. Dollaway that improved his Octagon mark to 8-5 in 13 career appearances.
