If Fabricio Werdum gets by Roy Nelson tonight at UFC 143: Condit vs. Diaz he expects to be one more win away from a shot at fighting for the UFC heavyweight title. While it’s impossible to know who he’ll face, one opponent that makes sense is Frank Mir based on the former champion’s recent success and comparable skill-set.
Werdum was recently asked about Mir in relation to a comment the longtime UFC fighter had made complimenting the Brazilian’s BJJ as being better than his.
“I didn’t see it coming, I’ve always seen him as a ”˜cocky’ guy. I guess he’s a very good athlete, and he proved the world he has great Jiu-Jitsu level,” said Werdum of Mir’s comment in a conversation with TATAME. “I don’t see myself as the best on the ground, but I’ve shown the world I can handle things there.”
When talk turned to a potential fight with Mir, Werdum seemed interested in the match-up although he made it clear his focus is on his bout against Nelson.
“I guess this fight could happen, absolutely. My next appointment is Roy Nelson, but it’s one of the fights that might come up,” responded the 14-5-1 Werdum.
Catch Werdum vs. Nelson tonight on PPV when things start at 10:00 PM EST with Facebook/FX prelims hitting the airwaves at 7:00 PM EST.
