UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez has been basking in his golden glory since beating Junior dos Santos a little more than a month ago to become the divisional king. However, Velasquez’s attention will soon turn towards a new foe with the distinct possibility of Alistair Overeem emerging with a claim to contendership in tow tonight.
Overeem is scheduled for action against Antonio Silva at UFC 156 with a guaranteed title-shot waiting for him if victorious. Though Velasquez knows anything can happen in a fight, let alone one featuring heavyweights, he recently told MMAJunkie he expects Overeem to seal the deal by beating “Bigfoot”.
“I think he’ll win. I think ‘Bigfoot’ is a tough dude, also, but Overeem definitely has a great chance. He’s been one of the top guys in this sport forever now. He’s a big, strong guy with a lot of power. He definitely has a good chance.”
“I don’t know (what happens if he doesn’t win. Maybe Roy Nelson or Stefan Struve. We’ll see what the UFC decides and see what happens with this fight. I really haven’t thought about who it will be if Overeem doesn’t win. The UFC hasn’t said anything, either. But he’s definitely one of the best.”
