Bellator Featherweight Pat Curran is still shining his defended belt from last Thursday night, and the promotion is already setting up his next opponent. Bellator released the season 8 featherweight brackets today, and before the season is over Curran will have a new challenger. The tournament will kick off Thursday night on February 7th at Bellator 88.
On one side of the bracket, early favorite Marlon Sandro will take on new Russian signee Akop Stepanyan and his fellow countrymen Frodo Khasbulaev will take on Fabricio Guerrerio. The other side will feature Mike Richman fighting Mitch Jackson and Alexandre Bezerra will fight Genair da Silva.
Sandro sent out a release discussing his view on the tournament, “There is nothing in this world I want more than the Bellator featherweight title and this is my road. I love Bellator with all my heart and I know my opportunity is now.
Richman is taking on new comer Mitch Jackson, and he had a message for his opponent and the whole bracket. Richman announced, “I’m going to out class Mitch Jackson and show him he isn’t at my level. He’s going to sleep, and then I plan on finishing the rest of the field and getting my title shot and that $100,000 prize.”
The event will be headlined by a title fight between Alexander Shlemenko and Maiquel Falcao to determine the new middleweight champion. Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney wrapped up the announcement succinctly, “With a Middleweight World Title fight and the start of our $100,000 stacked Featherweight Tournament, February 7th from the Gwinnet Center is going to be a huge night live on Spike TV.”
