He was WEC royalty until the very end, when Anthony Pettis came in and stole his glory, and his transition to UFC life eventually had him wearing gold there, too. Pettis usurped that crown as well, but really, that takes nothing away from the fact that Benson Henderson is firmly established as one of the elite in the lightweight class. He can strike, he can wrestle if he has to, and he can snag a submission when one presents itself, yet his edge is his ability to go hard for five rounds – a trait that will likely serve him well when he tangles with the veteran Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 10 on Saturday night.

Still a little fuzzy on “Bendo” and what he’s capable of? Fear not. Here’s what you need to know about him in easily-digestible form:

  •  Henderson’s first fight in the UFC was at UFC 129 on April 30, 2011. His last fight was against Pettis at UFC 164 last August.
  • Until that Pettis fight, he was undefeated in the Octagon. He’s 7-1 in the UFC now, and his overall record is 19-3.
  • His most memorable loss was via decision at WEC 53, when Pettis utilized the “Showtime Kick” that will forever grace the highlight reels.

  • Bendo has won two fights via knockout, eight by submission and nine by decision. He’s lost twice via submission and once via decision.

  • In addition to a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, he’s a newly-minted black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also wrestled in college.
  • Notable wins include decisions over Frankie Edgar (twice), Nate Diaz, Jim Miller, Clay Guida and Gilbert Melendez.
