He once ruled the lightweight division with an iron fist. Then after a few years of inconsistent and lack luster performances, Yves Edwards looks to have returned to true form.
In Fort Hood in Killeen, Tex. Edwards, a product of American Top Team, put on a show before our fellow troops when he battled Cody McKenzie during tonight’s Facebook televised preliminary fight for “UFC Fight for the Troops 2″–choking out the choke artist.
In the early goings, Edwards used his superior striking to dictate the action in the first round. He was able to thwart off any takedown attempts by McKenzie, who was likely looking for his signature guillotine choke that has aided him in 10 of his 12 victories.
Things got a little hairy for Yves in the second round, where after some strong strikes on the feet that had McKenzie wilting, the six-foot Alaskan eventually worked the action to the ground by pulling gaurd, and eventually secured the 34-year-olds back. After a grappling exchange, Cody allowed Edwards to reverse positions where the lightweight spitfire was able to gain side mount. The near 60-fight veteran got the mount, pounded away on Cody before he secured a tight rear-naked choke.
Cody refused to tap, and he inevitably choked unconcious.
With the win, Yves is now 2-0 since returning to the octagon and will look to climb the ladder of the stacked lightweight division once again where he was once proclaimed as the “uncrowned lightweight champion”.
