Middleweight-turned-205er Chael Sonnen has a reputation for being a relentless grinder with excellent takedown technique and top control. For reference, fans need to look no further than his success in putting all-time great Anderson Silva on his backside en route to dominating significant portions of two separate fights he ultimately lost.
However, Sonnen’s next opponent – light heavyweight champion Jon Jones – isn’t worried about Sonnen’s wrestling skill. After all, as he pointed out to UFC Tonight, he’s never been put on the mat himself in comparison to Sonnen’s inability to claim anything close to such a distinction.
“Chael definitely takes down a lot of opponents. But then again, I’ve seen him taken down by guys like Demian Maia – guys who aren’t really wrestlers. Right now, I haven’t been taken down by anyone. I’m not gonna say it’s not possible to be taken down. But I’m gonna have to go with myself just based off of stats.”
Check out the complete interview with Jones where he also talks about Dan Henderson deserving a title-shot and Daniel Cormier needing to stop challenging him until actually dropping down to 205 pounds:
