It only seemed to be a matter of time before 24-year old Swede Alexander Gustafsson was named to the UFC on Fuel 2 event scheduled for April 14 in Stockholm but few predicted he would end up headlining the show. However, such will indeed be the case with “The Mauler” drawing polished veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the evening’s main event.
The bout and its placement on the card have both been confirmed by the UFC.
Gustafsson is considered to be a rising star in the light heavyweight division, compiling a 13-1 record with twelve stoppages and impressive TKO victories over Matt Hamill and Vladimir Matyushenko. His only career loss came via submission to unbeaten contender Phil Davis who he now trains with at Alliance MMA.
As it turns out Davis is also the last man to defeat Nogueira, outpointing the crafty Brazilian at UFN 24,lthough “Minotoro” has since bounced back by flattening Tito Ortiz midway through a December match-up. The 20-5 Nogueira also holds past wins over a handful of other former champions including Dan Henderson and Alistair Overeem (who he beat twice).
