A crushing blow was dealt to Strikeforce earlier today when ferocious, fan-favorite featherweight champion Cristiane Santos was revealed to have tested positive for anabolic steroid use (stanozolol) after her most recent fight and will be relegated to the sidelines until late 2012 as a result.
In addition to the year-long suspension Santos will also be fined $2,500 and has had the result of her win over Hiroko Yamanaka changed to a “No Contest”.
According to a statement from the California State Athletic Commission, “Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters. Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”
No official word has come from Santos relating to the allegations but, as all suspended fighters do, she does reserve the right to appeal the decision.
Santos’ return to the ring in December came after a seventeen month break from MMA based on a contractual dispute and Strikeforce’s inability to find her a legitimate contender. Given that the promotion only has seven more guaranteed events on Showtime today’s news could very well mark the last fans see of Santos in the Strikeforce cage.
