There’s no doubt UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson is the top 125er in Mixed Martial Arts. Johnson, a force at bantamweight as well, looked sharp against Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez en route to winning the division’s first UFC belt and has rarely shown any weakness inside the Octagon.
However, top contender John Dodson is one of the few fighters showing speed similar to Johnson’s own rapid-fire pace and, as a result, could pose a real threat when the two tussle. While Johnson believes their headlining tilt at UFC on FOX 6 should be extremely entertaining, he’s not so sure Dodson’s quickness will equate to victory unless he refines other areas of his attack.
“He’s super-athletic, I’m aware of that. He has a great sense of style and he likes to go out there and fight. I think overall it’s gonna be a very exciting fight.”
“He can have the speed to contend with me but it’s not always about the speed. That’s not how I win all my fights. It’s not because I’m super-fast. I’d like to think that I’m good fundamentally and I have a good skill-set. So he can match me speed-for-speed, but will he match my pressure? Will he be able to match my cardio? There are more aspects (involved) than speed.”
