Perennial UFC title-contender Jon Fitch entered 2013 in an unfamiliar position as a welterweight looking up at a number of other challengers rather than towards a crack at champion Georges St-Pierre. However, the situation suits Fitch fine, as he recently explained he’s starting to approach his career one clash at a time rather than ahead at a prize he may never actually get a shot at.
The 24-4-1 Fitch scheduled to face Demian Maia at UFC 156 where he’ll attempt to build off the momentum gained by beating Erick Silva this past October. Though Fitch knows a victory won’t propel him to the top of the division, the grizzled grappler does have an opinion on how things will play out on that end of the spectrum.
“I’m not even going to think about taking any kind of top-seed-type stuff for the whole 2013. I think that’s already booked, honestly.”
“I think a shake-up could have happened if Johny Hendricks would have gotten the title shot. I think right now it looks like ‘GSP’ will probably defeat Nick Diaz. The way it looks, I think there’s a strong possibility the fight after that will probably be (Strikeforce title-holder) Nate Marquardt just because it’s champion vs. champion.”
